Highly common, uncomfortable and sometimes debilitating, sciatica refers to radiating pain that starts in the lower back or hip and shoots down the leg. The irritation or compression of the sciatic nerve, the longest nerve in the body, causes this discomfort.
The Primary Causes
There can be a combination of reasons why people have sciatic symptoms, such as a misalignment of the lower back or vertebrae. But often, we see it in combination with disc degeneration. Obesity and prolonged sitting also can contribute to sciatica.
What Are the Symptoms?
Typically, sciatica affects one side of the body. The pain can vary widely, from a mild ache to a sharp, burning sensation or excruciating discomfort. Sometimes, it can feel like a jolt or electric shock. The sooner you can get an evaluation, the faster you can start on the path to recovery.
At Advantage Chiropractic, we understand how debilitating sciatica can be and are committed to helping you find relief.
Step One: a Thorough Exam
Our approach to addressing sciatica is comprehensive and customized. We start with a thorough chiropractic examination, employing various orthopedic tests, to identify the root cause of your sciatica. Dr. Mark focuses on the lower lumbar area where the sciatic nerve exits, as it’s often the origin of the discomfort.
We also use X-rays taken at specific times to evaluate the condition of the discs, which are the shock absorbers between the vertebrae. Often, we find disc degeneration between the fourth and fifth lumbar vertebrae or between the L5 and sacral region to be the culprit behind sciatica symptoms.
By understanding the exact source of your pain, we can develop a personalized care plan to relieve your symptoms, improve your mobility, and enhance your overall well-being.
Our Comprehensive Approach to Care
Our treatment primarily involves chiropractic adjustments to correct any misalignments in the lower back. These adjustments often result in significant relief for our patients. However, every patient is unique. If the symptoms persist despite our efforts, we may refer you for an MRI evaluation for a closer look at the nerve integrity and potential disc
herniations.
Sometimes, we may need to refer you to an orthopedic specialist. But rest assured, we will guide you at every step of the way, ensuring you receive the best possible care.
